What is ESG?
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance โ a framework for measuring an organization's sustainability and societal impact. ESG factors help investors, regulators, and stakeholders assess a company beyond traditional financial metrics.
Environmental
Social
Governance
๐ฑ Environmental
- Climate change & carbon emissions (Scope 1, 2, 3)
- Energy efficiency & renewable energy
- Water management & conservation
- Waste reduction & circular economy
- Biodiversity & land use
- Air & water pollution controls
๐ฅ Social
- Employee health, safety & wellbeing
- Diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI)
- Fair wages & labour rights
- Training & development
- Community engagement & CSR
- Supply chain human rights
โ๏ธ Governance
- Board structure & independence
- Executive compensation transparency
- Anti-corruption & ethics policies
- Regulatory compliance
- Shareholder rights
- Risk management frameworks
Direct Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Emissions from sources owned or controlled by your organization
What counts as Scope 1?
Boilers, furnaces, turbines, heaters using fuel on-site
Company-owned cars, trucks, forklifts, generators
Chemical production, metal smelting, cement manufacture
Refrigerant leaks (HFCs), methane from pipelines, SF6
How is it calculated?
Reduction Strategies
Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy
Emissions from electricity, steam, heating & cooling purchased externally
What counts as Scope 2?
Grid electricity from utility companies for manufacturing
District heating/steam bought from external suppliers
District cooling or chilled water from external sources
Hot water, process heat from third-party sources
Two Accounting Methods
Location-Based
Uses average grid emission factor for the region. Reflects the average intensity of the local electricity grid.
Market-Based
Uses emission factors from instruments like RECs, PPAs, or supplier-specific data. Preferred for target-setting.
Reduction Strategies
Value Chain Emissions (Upstream & Downstream)
All other indirect emissions from the entire value chain โ often the largest share

Why Scope 3 matters?
Scope 3 typically accounts for 70โ90% of a company's total carbon footprint. Ignoring Scope 3 means missing most of your climate impact. Regulatory pressure (e.g., SEC, CSRD, BRSR) now mandates Scope 3 disclosure.
